What Is Micellar Water And How Does It Cleanse?

May 12, 2021 | Expert Advice

Before making its way over to us, micellar water had been hidden away in French pharmacies for over 100 years. Now, though, this simple-yet-effective cleansing water is the go to choice to refresh, cleanse and soothe the skin – but what is micellar water and how does it work? We explain everything below…

What Is Micellar Water?

First things first: what is micellar water? Micellar water is a lightweight cleanser formulated with suspended molecules called micelles.

These micelles are small oil-based surfactants that act like magnets, lifting away excess dirt and dissolving makeup, without irritating the skin’s natural barrier. Instead, skin feels hydrated and balanced, and looks soft and radiant.

Micellar water can be found in many forms, including oil-based, milk-based, foaming and gel formulas – but what are the benefits?

What Does Micellar Water Do?

Micellar water benefits the skin, as it:

Removes makeup

The micelles in micellar water dissolve dirt and makeup, leaving skin clean and refreshed.

Cleanses without drying

Micelles are kind to the skin and draw out impurities without stripping the skin of its natural oils. The result? A clean complexion that doesn’t feel tight or dry.

Hydrates the skin

Micellar water is often infused with hydrating ingredients, like Glycerin and Argan Oil, that help to retain moisture, leaving skin hydrated and radiant.

Soothes the skin

Blended with soothing ingredients like Glycerin and Rose Water, micellar water can help to soothe and calm the skin.

Who Can Use Micellar Water?

You’ll be pleased to learn that micellar water is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin, thanks to its gentle-yet-effective water-based formula.

How To Use Micellar Water

Micellar water can be used alone to remove dirt and makeup. However, if you wear a full face of makeup or are prone to oiliness and congestion, we recommend using it as the first step of your evening double cleansing routine.

Dispense the micellar water onto a cotton or reusable pad and sweep across the face and neck to remove daily grime and makeup. Then, cleanse with a nourishing face wash to remove the remaining traces of dirt and makeup, creating a clean base for the next steps of your skincare routine.

The Best Micellar Water

Looking for the best micellar water? We recommend our Foaming Micellar Cleansing Water. It’s as quick as a face wipe but more effective:

  • Cleansing micelles act like magnets to remove traces of dirt and makeup, leaving skin clean and refreshed.
  • Rose Water soothes the skin by helping to maintain its pH balance, and reduce irritation and redness.
  • Nourishing Argan Oil moisturises and softens the skin.

Before applying, shake the bottle to mix the micelles with the water. Pump the micellar water onto a cotton pad or reusable cloth and sweep across the face, eyes and lips to remove traces of makeup. There’s no need to rinse! To double cleanse, follow with a hydrating face wash.

Therapist’s Tip: Use our travel-sized Foaming Micellar Cleansing Water to keep skin feeling smooth and clean on the go.
